Mustang is part of Tibetan plateau. Nowadays it is one of the districts of Nepal; however, before 1950 it was a separate kingdom within the boundaries of Nepal. Upper Mustang was opened for tourists only in 1992. Even today it is highly restricted area, and trekkers need special permit to trek there. Upper Mustang is also known as the Himalayan rain shadow because it receives no monsoon rain while most of the country is drained in monsoon season. However, the flip side of this is that the trekkers can trek this region even during monsoon season when other trekking trails are haunted by the danger of landslide at the time

Upper Mustang trek is known as moderate trek as it is one of the relatively easier trekking trails; the highest altitude on this trail is just 3920 meters. Nonetheless, the trekkers must be fit to trek as it is always windy and dusty throughout the year, and very cold if one treks during winter. During the trek one can experience fantastic view of high mountains, beautiful landscape, and experience authentic way of life of the mountain people.

The potential trekkers should be aware of the fact that they cannot expect sophisticated lodges here as it is relatively newer trail, nonetheless nowadays there are lot of tea houses in the region where the trekkers are accommodated.
